As sequels go, the third installment in the dinosaurs-walk-the-earth-again franchise is better than expected. (This time, the big beasts are doing more than walking. Hint: Look up.) It certainly improves on "The Lost World," the second "Jurassic Park" episode, which was little more than high-tech homage to '50s-era giant-monster flicks after the thrill ride and wondrous computer dinos of the first. The budget for "III" was the trilogy's least pricey. Steven Spielberg, who directed the first two chapters, handed the reins to Joe Johnston, who keeps things lean, mean and B-movie brisk. After missing "The Lost World," Sam Neill is back in the role of scientist Alan Grant. Having survived one clash with genetically revived dinosaurs, Grant has no desire for another encounter until the Kirbys (William H. Macy, Téa Leoni) offer him a huge research grant if he'll join them when they fly over the reptiles' quarantined island refuge. But the Kirbys' true agenda will bring Grant face-to-snout with the thunder lizards again. | |||
