Trish and her brother Darry are on their way home during a break from college. Driving down a deserted highway in the heartland, they encounter a sinister truck that nearly runs them off the road. When they finally learn who's behind the wheel, they'll wish they'd kept driving. There's nothing wholly original here, but director/writer Victor Salva ("Powder") brings enough smart dialogue and creepy tension to his supernatural horror movie to overcome the inherent lapses in logic that plague the plot. In other words, it's a slight cut above your average slasher film. Even the addled, risky decisions made by Trish and Darry don't destroy the bloody good time. In fact, Trish comments at one point on the victims' blunders that are a hallmark of the genre. Easily queasy? Beware: Things get extremely visceral. Gina Philips, from TV's "Ally McBeal," is fresh as Trish; Justin Long is infuriating as Darry, who can't leave well enough alone; and Eileen Brennan's cameo is mega-creepy. Expect a sequel. | |||
