Usually larger than life, Bruce Willis is subdued and pained as Philadelphia child psychologist Malcolm Crowe in writer/director M. Night Shyamalan's adroit shocker. Prepubescent actor Haley Joel Osment is Cole, a tormented lad who...sees...dead people. Although Malcolm has been traumatized by the crazed attack and suicide of an ex-patient, he resolves to help poor Cole through his problems. The result is a supernatural thriller that plays far better than the subject matter deserves, delivers genuine tension and ends with a surprise payoff that elevates the whole project and demands the repeat viewings that a DVD affords. Toni Collette ("Muriel's Wedding") is the long-suffering single mom raising the haunted Cole. Olivia Williams ("Rushmore") is the psychiatrist's long-suffering mate. Everybody suffers here, and the resolution is very disturbing. This follow-up to Shyamalan's impressive, but more conventional, debut film, "Wide Awake," sealed his reputation as a singular, visionary filmmaker. | |||
