A singer from an early-'80s heavy-metal cover band ends up as the frontman of his Judas Priest-like favorite group and learns that stardom is a cruel mistress. This latest go at a movie about the rock life features Mark Wahlberg as Chris, the long-haired, leather-clad screecher in question, and Jennifer Aniston as his longtime girlfriend. It turns out to be a little better than expected, which was somewhere between clumsy and disastrous. There are intentionally comedic elements, but the filmmakers want us to empathize with their hero, a working-class metalhead who reveres the banal howl of your archetypal, sex-and-drug-crazed hard rockers. (Wahlberg went from co-starring with one kind of hairy chimp in "Planet of the Apes" to playing opposite a different type of hairy chimp.) Chris must choose whether to embrace moronic rock anthems, mass acclaim, booze, dope and plentiful poontang or be true to his old flame and his introspective creative urges. And you can choose another movie. | |||
