Another film inspired by a "serious" effort from the pen of horror-meister Stephen King, whose less, um, supernatural work has been adapted for such memorable non-creepy movies as "Stand by Me" and "The Shawshank Redemption." This one, a coming-of-age story set during the late '50s, doesn't rank with those aforementioned features. Despite a hint of the paranormal in the plot, the drama's real power comes from the gentle relationship between a timid, impressionable 11-year-old boy and Ted Brautigan, a psychic older gentleman who rents a room from the lad's cash-strapped single mother. Mom (Hope Davis), a slatternly secretary who's not beyond a self-serving dalliance with her boss, is troubled by Ted's growing influence on her son (Anton Yelchin). But mysterious Ted, played by Anthony Hopkins ("Hannibal") with a kindly twinkle in his eyes, turns out to be a godsend for the boy. All-pro Hopkins and the rest of the cast manage to transcend affected dialogue and a hokey premise. | |||
