Gen X comic actor Ben Stiller ("Meet the Parents") earns a few more frequent-funny miles with his latest vehicle, satirizing the fashion industry and today's media-driven star-making machinery. He directed it, co-wrote it and plays the title character, the vacuous, narcissistic yet incredibly popular male model Derek Zoolander. Stiller's targets are barn-sized: meaningless awards shows, gossip-fueled magazines and TV programs, the fickleness of the American public and Austin Powers be damned! spy movies. Easygoing Owen Wilson ("Shanghai Noon"), as Derek's modeling rival Hansel, and "SNL"'s Will Ferrell, as the designing arch-villain, effortlessly steal the film from Stiller. But the real reason to catch this is the peppering of fashion-scene in-jokes and celebrity cameos that zip past so fast, you're lucky to catch half of them. Stiller's wife Christine Taylor is Derek's love interest; his father Jerry Stiller is Derek's double-dealing agent; Milla Jovovich is the lissome femme fatale. | |||
