The Hughes Brothers, the African American directing team behind the contemporary, urban-themed films "Menace II Society" and "Dead Presidents," have taken on the tale of Jack the Ripper and turned out a visually stunning, rip-roaring thriller with a harrowing, dreamlike Victorian London setting. So much for racially profiling directors. Speaking of non-traditional, Americans-with-accent-coaches Johnny Depp and Heather Graham are the leads, playing, respectively, the psychic, opium-addicted Scotland Yard inspector on the serial killer's tail and one of the prostitutes targeted by the Ripper. Depp is particularly good, and the Britishness of the project is enhanced by first-rate supporting actors from the UK, including the phenomenal Ian Holm and the imposing Robbie Coltrane. The filmmakers foster lots of tension and toss around as much gore as the legend requires. Based on the great Alan Moore-Eddie Campbell graphic novel that's rife with class warfare and political intrigue. | |||
