A desolate British estate located on a wind-swept island right after World War II. A pair of children with a rare skin condition that requires the shades to be drawn in the daytime. A tragically unhinged wife and mother coping with her husband's wartime death. All of the elements are there for a hauntingly effective ghost story. Director Alejandro Amenábar ("Open Your Eyes") hits all the right notes, with the help of an ideally tremulous performance by Nicole Kidman as the woeful widow stuck with her sickly kids in that big old empty house. In the tradition of such tales, the Gothic vibe is omnipresent. When a dour trio shows up at the mansion door to seek employment, you expect banging noises, inanimate objects that suddenly move and spectral visitations. But the film keeps you guessing, and it pays off with some shockers and unexpected twists. Kidman, worlds away from her preceding role as the sultry sex-bomb in "Moulin Rouge," manages to be both sympathetic and alarming. | |||
