Impressive, finely-wrought amusement-park ride of a movie that brings to life the first book of fantasy author J.R.R. Tolkien's beloved "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. In the hands of quirky, fastidious, wildly creative New Zealand director Peter Jackson ("Heavenly Creatures"), the material is true to its source and covers a lot of the ground in the fanciful setting, Middle-Earth. Frodo (Elijah Wood), a member of the diminutive race of hobbits, becomes a reluctant hero and potential savior of his world when his uncle Bilbo (Ian Holm) and the wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) entrust the lad to transport and destroy an all-powerful ring that can corrupt its wearer. Hobbit, elf, troll and human representatives accompany Frodo on his journey, while an evil force that craves the ring grows in power. Despite the film's three-hour length, the classic storytelling, visual potency and grand cast (Cate Blanchett, Viggo Mortensen, Sean Astin, Liv Tyler, Christopher Lee, etc.) leave you eager for Part 2. It will be tough to break the hobbit. | |||
