A quirky, totally cool and subversively funny update of "Macbeth," Shakespeare's drama of power lust, greed, murder and manipulation. Writer/director Billy Morrissette transforms "the Scottish play" into a dark comedy set in rural Pennsylvania during the mid-'70s and makes the kingdom that Macbeth gains and may lose ... a fast-food restaurant. Macbeth and his lady become fry cook Joe "Mac" McBeth (James LeGros, late of TV's "Ally McBeal") and his conniving wife, counter girl Pat (Maura Tierney of TV's "ER"), who work at Duncan's diner. But Pat has big dreams that will lead to mayhem. There are modern equivalents of other characters in the play: the three witches as stoned, babbling hippies (Andy Dick, Amy Smart, "Speed" Levitch); Macduff, who uncovers the Macbeths' deadly deeds, as police detective Lt. McDuff (the always-welcome Christopher Walken), etc. Garnished with kitsch of the era (Bad Company songs, Farrah 'dos, polyester) and rockin' turns by the cast, it's damned tasty. | |||
