Marisa Tomei seemed to evaporate into a strange netherworld since winning a supporting-actress Oscar for "My Cousin Vinny" far too many years ago. Finally, she gets a decent lead role. She and Vincent D'Onofrio ("The Cell") are a great fit as oddball lovers in director Brad Anderson's quirky, provoking film that crossbreeds romance and sci-fi. Tomei is Ruby, a lonely single woman in Manhattan. After enduring relationships with a string of lame guys, she is resigned to never finding that perfect someone until she meets and falls for the persistent and weird Sam (D'Onofrio). Ruby is relatively unfazed by Sam's eccentricities and the gaps in his knowledge, which could be chalked up to naïveté or a small-town upbringing. Until he tells her that he is, in fact, a visitor from the far future the year 2470. Sam might be dangerously crazy, could be playing an elaborate practical joke or might actually be a time traveler. Now Ruby must grapple with a boyfriend problem unlike any she has experienced. With Anthony Michael Hall and Holland Taylor. | |||
