Whoo-o-o-o-o! Kevin Costner gets messages from the Great Beyond in this unmemorable try at a supernatural thriller. Or does he? Costner plays workaholic Dr. Joe Darrow, whose wife Emily (Susanna Thompson), a pediatrician dedicated to field work in underprivileged Third World countries, dies in a bus accident in a Latin American jungle. Or does she? The grieving hubby starts having premonitions about his disappeared mate. Then, he learns of children who are patients in the hospital ward where his wife worked and who have near-death experiences that include visions of Emily and some kind of squiggly-line symbol. Joe starts to encounter the same symbol wherever he goes and goes increasingly nutso. You know it's just a matter of reels before he heads south to the place where his wife supposedly died. Despite some nice cinematography and a game performance by Kathy Bates as the Darrows' chummy neighbor, Costner seems constipated, and the general air of the project is stale. | |||
