With a cruel, tyrannical attitude ensuring him a platinum inscription in the annals of screen villainy, Anthony LaPaglia sinks his teeth into the role of Centabank CEO Simon O'Reilly in the crafty, engrossing Australian econo-thriller "The Bank." The film itself is a timely cautionary tale, attuned to our current climate of corporate greed and disregard for humble shareholders. Simon is an arrogant, master-of-the-universe type who hires young, rumpled computer whiz and mathematician Jim Doyle (David Wenham), an expert in chaos theory. Doyle insists that he's capable of accurately predicting the ups and downs of the stock market. So the cunning Simon orders him to pinpoint the next market crash, which would allow Centabank to act according to the inside information and make a killing. Although Simon promises to reward him with wealth, power and privilege, Doyle has something more in mind. Director Robert Connolly's screenplay nicely weaves in a subplot about victimized bank customers.
