It's not like Robert De Niro needs another cop role or crime movie in his filmography, but "City by the Sea" gives the larger-than-life character actor one of his best dramatic parts in years. De Niro is New York City police detective Vincent LaMarca in "City by the Sea," a gritty motion picture inspired by actual events. When LaMarca begins investigating a homicide in his now-dilapidated former hometown of Long Beach, Long Island, he's shocked and dismayed to discover that his estranged, drug-addicted son Joey (James Franco of "Spider-Man") is a suspect in the killing. Forced to revisit Long Beach and reconnect with Joey, Vincent must also contend with tragedies from his past and the resentment of his embittered ex-wife (Patti LuPone). Meanwhile, Vincent's lover (Frances McDormand of "The Man Who Wasn't There") would like him to truly commit to their relationship. Cast-wide, the acting is impressive. Director Michael Caton-Jones juggles action and family matters, with conviction. | |||
