In light of the magnificent full-length DVD version of the first film in director Peter Jackson's "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, the exquisite second chapter "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" bodes well for the quality of the big finale to come. "The Two Towers" is the sprawling, action-packed middle of author J.R.R. Tolkien's beloved sword-and-sorcery saga, which follows diminutive Frodo the Hobbit on a quest to destroy the powerful ring that controls all other magical rings in the mystical dimension of Middle Earth. Frodo (Elijah Wood) and his friend Sam (Sean Astin) must travel to a hellish kingdom and toss the ring into a fiery pit. But evil wizards conspire against Frodo and send demonic legions to enslave or kill all humans, elves and Hobbits. Only good wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and a ragtag army led by noble warrior Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen) oppose the dark forces. Cast members Cate Blanchett, John Rhys-Davies, Liv Tyler, Christopher Lee and Orlando Bloom are back, but the true acting marvel is the pitiable computer-generated Gollum, which gives the most amazing performance ever by a digital construction. | |||
