Metal fatigue. That might explain why the relentless robot played by Arnold Schwarzenegger in "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines" seems to have aged since the 1991 sci-fi hit "Terminator 2." What's really fatiguing about the third chapter in the Terminator saga is that it's a less interesting expansion on the strivings of potential savior of humanity John Connor and his indestructible, back-from-the-future guardian, the Terminator (Schwarzenegger). Routinely directed by Jonathan Mostow, "T3" is inferior to its predecessors, which were brought to pulpy yet high-tech life by director James Cameron. "T3" rehashes Ah-nold's catch phrases ("I'll be back!") and does the same with trademark vignettes from the earlier films. Nick Stahl replaces Edward Furlong as Connor, the young man who wrongly thinks that he, his mother and the Schwarzenator have rescued mankind from a predestined war with sentient machines. Recasting Connor is less of a problem than the loss of actor Robert Patrick, AKA the evil, morphing Terminator from "T2." Instead of Patrick, "T3" has bland, unmenacing starlet Kristanna Loken as a villainous female model of the killer mechazoid. With Claire Danes as Connor's good-girl counterpart. | |||
