The long-threatened team-up of franchise-fueling super-villains Freddy "A Nightmare on Elm Street" Krueger and Jason "Friday the 13th" Voorhees has come to gory fruition. Not "A Nightmare on Friday the 13th." Not "A Jason on Elm Street." Not "Freddy the 13th." No. The only title for this horror crossover had to be "Freddy vs. Jason," like a heavyweight title match. For all of the copious special-effectual slicing, dicing and bleeding, the B-movie merchandising marvel envisioned by studio bean-counters is cable-ready drivel for the bored or loaded. There are spine-snappings, decapitations and eviscerations of dim young people, yet nothing's too interesting until the main event, when razor-fingered child-killer Freddy goes at invulnerable hockey-masked psycho-with-a-machete Jason. Freddy, played with his usual glee by Robert Englund, is forgotten by the denizens of suburban Elm Street. Stuck in Hell, he can't enter people's dreams to terrorize them, so he resurrects Jason and sends him to Elm Street to reawaken the fear that feeds Freddy's existence. But Jason won't quit slaughtering teen morons and let Freddy loose. Thus, the two monsters have their face-off, which the fans will love. Ecch. | |||
