In organizing "The Event," director/co-writer Thom Fitzgerald presided over an AIDS-oriented drama that's well-meaning and impassioned, but too strenuous and needlessly showy to be classified as anything more than a nice try. Fitzgerald approaches the tragedy of one man's premature death and the joy of his life via the ancient storytelling device of the interested outsider — one who speaks to numerous witnesses in order to divine the meaning behind an affair or circumstance. In this case, the outsider is New York City assistant district attorney Nick, a tightly wound woman played by Parker Posey. Nick is assigned to uncover the facts behind the death of AIDS patient Matt (Don McKellar), who passed away under curious circumstances. On the night he died, he was guest of honor at a soiree in his own apartment. The D.A.'s office wants to know if Matt was a victim of terminal illness or a willing participant in assisted suicide. To piece together the whole story, Nick interviews friends and family, such as Matt's distraught mother (Olympia Dukakis), his loving sister Dana (Sarah Polley), his scornful sister Gaby (Joanna Adler) and his best friend and hospice caregiver Brian (Brent Carver). With Jane Leeves.
