Prey For Rock And Roll | ||||
Alex Steyermark Gina Gershon, Drea de Matteo, Lori Petty, Shelly Cole, Marc Blucas, Eddie Driscoll, Ivan Martin 2003 |
Irrefutably magnetic, Gina Gershon ("Bound," "Showgirls") is the major asset in the grrl-powered "Prey for Rock and Roll" as tattooed, pierced, bi-sexy Jacki a self-proclaimed rock chick, pushing 40 and still flailing away as a bandleader in the L.A. club scene with hopes of finding her first big break. Gershon almost sells the movie and its big lie that the rock life is still meaningful. Then, sordid, stupid characters and derivative, mediocre "music" debunk the idea. The script, co-written by quaintly-named Cheri Lovedog, presumes that chasing the dream of success in the music biz is a noble calling in our corporate-controlled society. Lovedog, whose career as a female rock musician never took off, may write from experience, but this is more an unintentionally funny potboiler than an honest, powerful drama. Clichés run rampant. The members of Jacki's all-girl band Clam Dandy are tragic strugglers: bassist Tracy (Drea de Matteo of "The Sopranos") is a poor little rich girl with a psycho boyfriend and a substance-abuse problem; guitarist Faith (Lori Petty) barely makes ends meet as a guitar teacher; drummer Sally (Shelly Cole) has a traumatic past and a brother (Mark Blucas) fresh from prison. Prey, indeed. | |||
