Bookending this remake of "Walking Tall," the '70s vengeance movie ostensibly based on the real experiences of crusading sheriff Buford Pusser, is the notation at the top, "Inspired by a true story," and, at the end, a disclaimer stating that any resemblance between the characters in the film and actual people is entirely coincidental. That's all anyone needs to know about the bogus 2004 model "Walking Tall," a shoddily built vehicle for pro-wrestler-turned-action-hero Dwayne Johnson better known as The Rock. Rather than play a character with the bizarre name of Buford Pusser, The Rock is Chris Vaughn, ex-Army Special Forces sergeant. Vaughn returns to his Pacific Northwest hometown and discovers that the sawmill is closed; his high-school rival Jay Hamilton (Neal McDonough) is running a casino that controls local commerce; drugs, X-rated shops and gambling are poisoning the area; and the sheriff is a corrupt bastard under Hamilton's control. Within minutes of seeing that his old girlfriend (Ashley Scott) is an exotic dancer at the casino, Vaughn is rumbling with security goons. He recovers from the beating, decides to run for sheriff, wins the election, and starts to bash heads with a big stick to save the town. Proof that "Walking Tall" is short on brains: Idiotic Johnny Knoxville of "Jackass" infamy plays Vaughn's deputy. | |||
