The pitch for the post-modern fantasy "Ella Enchanted" might've confused parochial studio executives. Yet, a movie green-lighter bought the idea of scrambling together the Cinderella elements of "The Princess Diaries," the gleeful rock-era anachronisms-gone-medieval of "A Knight's Tale," and the fairy-tale spoofery of "The Princess Bride." "Ella Enchanted," about a girl named Ella whose fairy godmother bequeaths to her the dubious gift of total obedience, doesn't quite live up to those influences. It takes the ample talent and charm of ingénue Anne Hathaway as Ella, and a flamboyant supporting cast, to turn this into a fair trifle for family viewing. Magic is routine in Ella's world, where humans, elves, giants, fairies and ogres once dwelled in harmony. The late king's evil brother Edgar (Cary Elwes) segregated the land and rules it with an iron fist. But his groovy nephew Prince Charmont (Hugh Dancy), adored like a pop idol, will ascend to the throne unless Edgar stops him. Cursed by her "gift" since birth, Ella decides to find her fairy godmother (Vivica A. Fox) and have her free will restored. Ella's quest leads her to fall in with and for the prince, but her stepsisters scheme against her. Happily-ever-aftering ensues. With Eric Idle as the narrator, Minnie Driver as Ella's nanny and Joanna Lumley as the wicked stepmother. | |||
