An intriguing mix of mystery, drama and romance from Italy, "Facing Windows" cuts back and forth from a World War II setting to a contemporary situation until the two storylines intersect. The modern side brings together Giovanna (radiant Giovanna Mezzogiorno), a beautiful woman dissatisfied by her dull job and stale marriage, and Davide, an elderly gentleman (the late Massimo Girotti) suffering from amnesia. Davide is lost and wandering in the street when he latches on to Giovanna's husband Filippo (Filippo Nigro). Reluctant to leave the dazed fellow with the police, Filippo brings him home. Davide's presence annoys the bottled-up Giovanna, whose frustration with Filippo begins to boil over. Only when she begins to interact with the surprisingly courtly Davide does she acknowledge her attraction to handsome next-door neighbor Lorenzo (Raoul Bova) and confront her true professional aspirations. As she unravels Davide's complicated past, she opens up to Lorenzo. Ferzan Ozpetek, director and co-screenwriter of "Facing Windows," tries to address a large list of issues in the film: marital fidelity, sexuality, religious intolerance, self-actualization, lost chances and dreams deferred. Not all of the elements fit together perfectly, but "Facing Windows" is a well-acted, carefully laid out repast for a thoughtful adult audience. | |||
