An urbanized, action-and-mystery-fueled update of the 1965 Western "The Sons of Katie Elder," "Four Brothers" features three successful-musicians-turned-actors Mark Wahlberg, André Benjamin and Tyrese Gibson turning in solid performances as interracial siblings. At-risk orphans Bobby (Wahlberg), Angel (Gibson), Jeremiah (Benjamin), and Jack (Garrett Hedlund) were sheltered by altruistic Detroit woman Evelyn Mercer (Fionnula Flanagan), who adopted the boys and raised them as her own. The quartet grew up and, for better or worse, the brothers went their separate ways until Evelyn's murder brought them back together. The suspicious circumstances of her death galvanize ne'er-do-wells Bobby, Angel and Jack; they're determined to find their mother's killer and exact vengeance. Jeremiah has a wife, two kids and a major, pending business deal and isn't so eager to endanger himself in pursuit of vigilante justice. Police detectives Green (Terrence Howard) and Fowler (Josh Charles) are running their own investigation, and keeping their eyes on all four Mercer boys. Meanwhile, a mob magnate (Chiwetel Ejiofor) has it in for the Mercers, and the entire situation is approaching critical mass. In the hands of a lesser director than John Singleton ("Boyz n the Hood"), the drama might've felt hokier, but he and the cast bring so much vitality and affection to "Four Brothers" that it pays off big. | |||
