David Howie's 'Moments' From The Year 2004
Neumu contributor David Howie writes: This is a mess, appropriately enough, since 2004 was a mess for me. The dilettantism that had taken late 2003 matured into full-on bitty disregard for any and all focused schemes of listening and taste. I had nothing near to an aesthetic or its approximate: not a noize kid nor a noise boy, not a freak nor a geek, I eked through the year chasing each next petty jouissance languidly, sometimes not listening to music for month-long stretches at a time, broken by days where I'd let myself a lone song. It has come as a small surprise to me, then, that my list of moments fragmentary glimpses of my insides is as long as it is. 2004 was a better year musically than I would let myself believe. What a great year for a terrible one! A shout-out to my friends lost and found (special mention has to go to ND, whose seemingly newfound excitement for the pure fact of music in its new and many vagaries was for me, in a lull, softly depressed, like drinking that Thai "Red Bull" extract, i.e. so invigorating) (and life-threatening? haha). Flyers keep on flying, writers keep on writing, bloggers keep on blogging (just playing, chill!), angels on yr body 2005!
MOMENTS of the year, 2004: Being the parts of life in 2004 contingent and phenomenological, too elusive to contain and scribbled by a lonely fool.
- watching Alex from Scatter (who would later drum with Jandek) (?!) dancing mental at the very front during the (unattended) Fiery Furnaces set, upstairs at ATP, Easter
- my friend Nick's story about walking along Glasgow's Argyle St. or Renfrew St. listening to Superpitcher's "The Long Way," the world dissolved into oblivion and sleepy footsteps
- dancing with Nick and a still-standing Richard, ruffling Colin's hair in some illicit (upside-down traffic cones for toilets!) password-protected ex-theatre in Glasgow's east end (to Akufen's jitterbug psychometry and a whole host of others)
- so many moments of utter transfixed loneliness among friends (Fiery Furnaces' Swedish reggae at king tut's, e.g.)
- "Ahh... fucking phones, man."
- the Knife's "Chinese '80s shit"
- turning away from the interminable Sonic Youth to hushed veneration, awe, muted fear, sweaty friends, and the sheer anticipation of Lightning Bolt, setting up at the back of the hall, ATP, Easter
- drawing into Glasgow on the megadeath bus as Twitch's whorehaus mix goes into Chris Isaak overdrive, nary a trace of irony, just a wink and
a gun a smile
- the constant ex post facto wonder at my own anticipation of things I know are destined to failure: Morrissey on Jonathon Ross, fr'instance
- Michael Dracula's Lery hustling lots of bands from lots of dance floors with lots of shouts, her inimitable buckshot-gravel voice, somewhere between witch and wizard, me smiling all the while
- David Sylvian's "blemish" still cold as windows in Glasgow's in cool spring
- cockles warmed to Fennesz' "Venice" in Aberdeen ("the city of potential sparkle!")
- "I Heart Huckabees"' wonderful soundtrack = my wonderful smiles
- "Christiansen/ Il dormait sur la plage entre deux rochers/ Christiansen/ S'il mangeait quelques fois, c'est que j'y pensais"
- Jandek live?!

- so many Freaks & Geeks moments, on the release of the DVDs: Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich's "The Monster"; Cheap Trick's "Gonna Raise Hell"; Styx's "Come Sail Away"; the montage of Haverchuck watching Gary Shandling; "you get a woman laughing, you have a woman loving"; etc., etc.
- at various bus stops around Scotland, breaking into impromptu mad-wide smiling as Kirsty MacColl's "They Don't Know" remix becomes the best song ever with its final elated "BABY... !"
- sitting in "The Belmont," Aberdeen, before Jean Eustache's "La Maman et la Putain," listening to some odd pre-show jazz, shoes off entirely, relaxed for the first time in a while, feeling at home
- "tick tock, tick tock, tick tock, tick tock, tick tock, TICK TOCK" (Gwen Stefani, "What Are You Waiting For?")
- the cock and shot SFX in Raphael Saadiq's "Rifle Love"
- realizing how caustic and forlorn is the Pet Shop Boys' "What Have I Done to Deserve This" ("I pour the drinks and crush the flower")
- Raina Lee's 1-up Mega-Zine (esp. its awesome Street Fighter 2: Super Collection essays and cartoons)

Ghost Cauldron, "Ambient Skit (Superpitcher Rmx.") (actually that song is just a full-on downer)
- 1:00 James Holden's remix of "The Sky Was Pink" turns itself on; 1:30 it flips channels and Steven Spielberg's "Close Encounters" is showing; 1:50 starts to echo, lost in some cave somewhere; 2:10 gets bored, starts to turn itself inside out, you know, for kicks; 2:30 it kicks; 2:35 then kicks; 2:40 kicks; 3:00 KICKS; 4:10 it boils!
